Termite 101

Termites are very destructive pests. They feed on wood, and in the United States, they’re responsible for more than $5 billion in property damage every year. That’s why it’s important for Iowa homeowners to be knowledgeable about termites. Pro-Staff, the Des Moines termite control company, has prepared a helpful guide about these wood-destroying pests.

Types of Termites

There are more than 2,000 species of termites, but fortunately, not all of them infest homes. In the United States, the three main types of troublesome termites are dampwood termites, drywood termites, and subterranean termites. They nest in moist wood, dry wood, and in underground colonies, respectively.

Subterranean termites are the most destructive of the three species. That’s because their colonies can have as many as two million members. Over time, their large colonies can cause significant damage to structures. Infested homes can even collapse due to structural damage!

Signs of a Termite Infestation

Termites are rarely seen out in the open. They spend most of their time traveling through tunnels in the soil or in their food sources. Due to this secretive nature, a termite infestation can remain undetected for an extended period of time.

Homeowners should stay alert for subtle signs of termite damage. Hollow-sounding wood, peeling paint, loose tiles, squeaky floorboards, or crumbling wood can be clues that termites are present. Piles of abandoned wings indoors, or earthen tubes on the home’s foundation, are also warning signs. If you see any of these signs, have your home inspected for termites.

Termite Treatments

Treating a termite infestation requires specialized equipment and skills, so DIY methods don’t usually work. A professional treatment could involve injecting liquid pesticides around the home’s foundation or fumigating the entire house depending on the type of termites involved.

Termite Prevention Tips

Fortunately, termite infestations are preventable, and there are many things homeowners can do to protect their homes. Monitor the exterior of your home, and repair any damage (like rotting shingles or loose mortar) that could let hungry termites come inside. Reduce moisture around your home, and quickly repair any leaking faucets or pipes. If you have a fireplace, store your woodpile at least 20 feet from your home.
