Spiders in the Home: What You Need to Know

Finding spiders in your home is never fun. They’re creepy and crawly, but they’re not as scary as they look. Most homes have at least one spider in them at any given time. In many cases, they help the people who live there more than they cause harm. There are a few different reasons why spiders go into people’s homes in search of food and shelter. Here’s everything you need to know about why you’re seeing spiders:

Why They’re There

People’s homes are full of hiding spots like basements and crawl spaces where spiders can be alone and away from harsh weather conditions. They find easy access through holes in walls, windows, doors and foundations. Once they get inside, the next step is finding insects to eat.

How They Help

Spiders eat insects that cause harm to humans, animals and plants. If you find them in your home or garden, as long as they’re not actively hurting people or animals, leave them there. Most spiders aren’t venomous, so they’re really just helping out. Even out of the venomous ones, very few have the capacity to kill humans. The only time you need to worry is when you see a significant number of spiders.

Removing a Spider

Spiders can live in your home, and it’s perfectly safe to keep a few of them there. However, they’re better off being outside in their natural habitat. You can try to trap a spider using a piece of paper and a glass, then carefully bring it outside. In most cases, they’ll cooperate as long as you move slowly. Be careful not to touch the spider because it may bite if provoked.

Dealing with an Infestation

Having spiders infest your home isn’t inherently bad, although it may be a little frightening to see them around. However, if you’re seeing a ton of spiders, it could be a sign that another, more harmful insect has invaded your home. Call a professional pest control company as soon as you notice a problem. They’ll be able to help with the spiders and find the underlying issue that’s attracting them.
