What is the Asian tiger mosquito?

Aedes albopictus, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, has rbecome abundant in several areas of Iowa, including Polk, Des Moines and Lee Counties. These mosquitoes are aggressive in biting and seeking out humans, and it appears that they’re here to stay.

This type of mosquito likely traveled to Iowa via commercial tires, as they’re often found near related businesses in the area. It was believed for the longest time that this type of mosquito couldn’t survive Iowa winters, but as the winters grow warmer due to climate change, they’ve been able to thrive throughout the year.
